Bluetooth® wireless system for smart tools to optimize workflows

Festool's Bluetooth RF system enables intelligent, wireless communication between tool and vacuum cleaner, thus increasing efficiency and safety in the workplace.

Arendi supported the development of a scalable BLE platform as a technical basis for future Bluetooth-enabled components and supplied platform components and software solutions for energy-efficient wireless communication, including dual Bluetooth roles and chained firmware updates.

Initial situation, goals & challenges

Festool faced the challenge of developing a new firmware platform for future Bluetooth-enabled electronic components. At the start of the project, the company was working without a real-time operating system (RTOS) and had only limited knowledge of radio technologies and Bluetooth. The goal was to create a scalable and future-proof architecture to serve as the technical foundation for upcoming products. The lack of internal expertise and a firmware platform necessitated collaboration with a specialized partner to efficiently build the technological foundation and achieve the development goals.

Project results & customer benefits

The project created a scalable and future-proof development platform that has already proven itself in field use. It forms the basis for all Bluetooth-enabled components in the Festool tool family.

For Festool, this represents genuine added value: The modular, RTOS-based architecture allows for the further development of a wide variety of product types on a common platform. The use of COS as a real-time operating system now enables the efficient implementation of even complex tasks. The software architecture is designed to offer maximum flexibility – different tool types can be developed on the same platform, which reduces development times and accelerates the market launch of new products.

Implemented solution

Development of a wireless communication platform for the Festool tool family based on Bluetooth LE and Arendi COS. Based on the Arendi BLE platform™ for Nordic nRF52 SOCs.
